Having previously worked with the Made Tusk Charity, Bex’s philanthropic passions led her to Nairobi, Kenya, to learn about the Maasai tribe culture. It was from here that she spent two weeks collaborating withCrea Africa Ltd, and the tribe, to create a luxury collection of hand-crafted jewellery. Crea focuses on empowering local community members through work and provides beautiful, bespoke products as a result.
Bex’s love of colour and texture is perfectly influenced in the Afrika collection by the traditional attributes of the Maasai culture, and the rich Kenyan backdrop in which she worked. Many of the pieces are directly inspired by the tribe’s ceremonial accessories and all support local artisans live and develop their skills. The main challenge was to work with locals on skills very traditional to their culture, and then transcend these qualities to luxury, desirable pieces.
In present day we are used to being surrounded by counterfeit, soulless products – Bex Rox wants to change that. It can take up to two weeks to produce a single item for this collection, with every bead used made of glass, not plastic: perfect for cool, summer wearability. The Bex Rox Afrika Collection proves that you can be ethical and supportive of other cultures: without going into mass production, and without compromising on quality.
