  • Shades of the decade: SS12 collections are already hitting the shops and that means it's high time to start thinking about relevant eyewear. Here are a look at some of favourites over the years...

    2006

The shades of the year were dictated by new brand of the year Karen walker...A collection of dark, oversized lenses inspired by in her own words “the eyewear of 1970’s dictators”. The tyranny of fashion.

2007: “Robots, car parts and droids” As outlined by Nicolas Ghesquiere, this year we saw clear shield sunglasses epitomized by Balenciaga’s spring 2007 collection funnily enough designed by Ghesquiere himself…

2008: Bring on the 80’s:  All about the wayferers… a continuation of the 2006/7 infatuation…but freshened up by the likes of Karl Lagerfeld who gave us his candy coated take of the trend…

2009: Imagine: John Lennon-esqe round frames were the look of the year with Proenza Schouler's Spring collection setting the standard (below).

2010: Colour my world with shades of...: All about colour. Coloured lenses...coloured frames, gone were the days of a simple pair of no nonsense aviators...

2011: Big is always better. But this time big was paired with cat eyes. We've covered 70's and 80's rehashes in the run up but last years rehashed decades of choice had to be the 50's and 60's. Think oversized, butterfly, cat eye shapes in an array of colours and prints.

2012: So what will it be for this summer? Our must have’s include designs by uber-cool brand Prism, who have an array of different styles named after equally uber-cool cities around the world.  Available in all sorts of sumptuous colour and style variations, the website itself  is worth a look for a bit of summer inspiration and a escape away from these gloomy January days…
